Apple has reportedly acknowledged the Wi-Fi problems with its new iPad (3rd gen), and is investigating the problem.
When the third-generation iPad first hit store shelves, users began to complain about charging and overheating issues. Now Apple is receiving reports that its coveted tablet sporting the spiffy new Retina display is also suffering Wi-Fi problems.
As seen here in a thread on Apple's online support forums, users are reporting a wide range of issues including the inability to access local Wi-Fi networks, connection drops, slow download and upload speeds, and more.
"I am in a hotel with my laptop and new ipad3. The laptop wifi reception is as strong as it gets, but the iPad only registers a weak signal. Anyone else having similar problems? Any suggestions?" reports one user.
"It has absolutely nothing to do with routers. I am right next to my wife, to whom I gave my iPad 1: she has full bars and I have 1-2. FYI: on Speedtest near the router I get over 10 mb downloads; 20 feet away I get .2 mb downloads. That’s ridiculous," reports another user.
Since the media began covering the Wi-Fi issues over the past few weeks, Apple has taken notice and is reportedly looking into what's going on. The company has admitted internally that some new iPads are indeed having the issues as described. According to Apple, "symptoms can include, but are not limited to: intermittent connectivity, slow Wi-Fi speeds, and Wi-Fi network not seen."
So far only the Wi-Fi models are having connectivity problems -- the 4G + W-Fi versions seem to be error-free. Apple is now reportedly telling AppleCare employees to make sure that the iPad 3 tablets they're testing aren't having Wi-Fi issues based on software, but because of actual hardware components.
On the consumer level, AppleCare has been told to retrieve the affected tablet and all accessories from the customer, and to ship it to Apple's engineering centers for examination and investigation. In turn, the customer will get a fresh new iPad 3 that will hopefully be error-free this time.
As of this article, Apple has not provided an official statement.

The wifi range issue on the new iPad (3) is a real pain. I was really annoyed when I tried my new toy and this happened to me. The worst part was no matter where I looked, I always found the same step by step guide to reset the network configuration, which worked only for the older models that don't recognize your home network at all. I did a bunch of research came across WIRED magazine and found a extensive and detailed review of Pong Research cases. These guys make a very special case which has a built-in antenna in between its layers, which redirects and boost the signal and range of your new iPad, iPhone and other devices. As a result, I'm able to connect to my router from much further without a problem. And that's not all, one of the features I like the most is their Origami Cover which folds in 5 different positions while still maintaining the sleep/wake function.
