Suburban man wanted in Wisconsin nabbed near Countryside

A Riverside man sought for escaping from a Wisconsin work release camp was apprehended at a motel in an unincorporated area near Countryside, authorities said Tuesday.

Cook County sheriff's police along with Countryside officers arrested Steven Sampson without incident at the motel in the La Grange Highlands at about 2:45 p.m. after authorities received a tip that Sampson might be staying there.

Sampson, 46, recently escaped from the camp in Green Lake, Wis., fleeing in a stolen 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix. After stealing the auto, police said Sampson put stolen plates on it.

Riverside police had suspected that Sampson, who was being held on a stalking conviction, might return to the area because he has relatives and acquaintances who live near his former Quincy Street home.

It was unclear exactly when Sampson would be returned to Wisconsin.
