At least two people are confirmed dead and one has been rescued after
an avalanche buried six foreign skiers in northern Norway, the
Associated Press reports.
Update at 12:35 p.m. ET:
Police spokesman Morten Pettersen says rescuers are searching for three
other people buried in the snow and have detected signals from their
avalanche transceivers.
He says one French citizen and five Swiss nationals were struck by the avalanche Monday near Tromsoe on Norway's Arctic coast.
Update at 11:34 a.m. ET: The Norwegian broadcaster NHK reports that one of the victims has been rescued alive.
Original post: Six tourists have been buried in an avalanche in northern Norway, the BBC and NHK report.
The
tourists were among 12 foreign skiers on Mount Sorbmegaisa in Kaafjord
when the accident occurred this afternoon, according to local police.
A medical helicopter and army personnel have been sent to the scene, the BBC reports.
