Shift workers 'risking' Type 2 diabetes and obesity


Shift workers getting too little sleep at the wrong time of day may be increasing their risk of diabetes and obesity, according to researchers.

The team is calling for more measures to reduce the impact of shift working following the results of its study.

Squeezed by a tight job market, young Americans are especially struggling. They have suffered bigger income losses than other age groups and are less likely to be employed than at any time since World War II.

How to Save an Unproductive Work Day

We've all had those days: A failure to launch. Hit a wall. Too many interruptions. Got distracted. Whatever the reason, an unproductive day is maddening. 

“People get caught up in the tyranny of urgent,” explained Michael Crom, the chief learning officer at the Dale Carnegie Institute, a corporate training organization. “Texting. People popping into our office. Phone ringing … cellphone ringing … personal stuff … it can all lead to some pretty bad work habits.” 

Exclusive: Sony Has Quietly Cut 100 U.S. Jobs Over Last Several Weeks

Sony Electronics, the U.S. arm of the Japanese consumer products company, has cut around 100 workers from its ranks over the past several weeks.

Although word of the cuts comes just as Sony changed its top leadership in Japan and slashed its full-year forecast sources say the U.S. moves have been in the works for months, and are part of a broader effort by Sony Electronics chief Phil Molyneux to reshape operations here.
