Good-bye split ends, hello split personality.
Constantine Maroulis snagged a Tony nom playing a shaggy-haired rocker in "Rock of Ages."
Next spring on Broadway, he'll star as a doctor with a scary alter ego in a revival of "Jekyll & Hyde," produced by Nederlander Presentations.
“I look forward to the challenge of bringing a cult title back to Broadway and across the country," Maroulis says. "My hope is that I can do it justice as many great performers before me have done."
The show by Frank Wildhorn (music) and Leslie Bricusse (lyrics and book) is based on a classic Robert Louis Stevenson novella about a London doc who accidentally unleashes his evil alternate self in his quest to cure his father’s mental illness.
Jeff Calhoun, who choreographed and directed Wildhorn's short-lived "Bonnie and Clyde" (it closed a month after opening) will do the same double duties.
The original Broadway production opened in 1997 and ran 1,543 performances before ending on Jan. 7, 2001. The dual lead role was played by a number of actors including Robert Cuccioli, Sebastian Bach and David Hasselhoff.
"Frank Wildhorn and Jeff Calhoun have become good friends and I admire their work and look forward to tackling this monster," says Maroulis, who's fully aware of the sports-loving Nederlanders link to the Bronx Bombers. "Maybe I can get some Yankee seats out of it as well.”
"J&H" will arrive on Broadway in the spring of 2013 following a 25-week national tour launching at San Diego's Civic Theatre in San Diego on October 2, 2012.
The opening date, theater, supporting cast and other tour cities are to be announced.
